What happened in Paris should rightly disgust every writer and content producer. To be silenced in such a way for causing offence is not terrorism. It is simple murder.
The cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo were iconoclasts, poking fun and turning humour into a spotlight on hypocrisy. More than that, they were fearless.
In the 1960’s Oz magazine caused outrage in England for it’s similar irreverence. A high court case failed to shut it down. This murder will not shut Charlie Hebdo down, or stop writers everywhere voicing their opinions, ideas and most important of all, humour.
History teaches us that they come after the writers and communicators first. To shut down ideas.
It never works because ideas can never be shut down from the barrel of a gun. Quite the reverse. They cannot win because ideas do not come out of the barrel of a gun and ideas will always win in the end.
So be fearless in your own writing. Be fearless in your ideas. There’s no other way.
We are all Charlie now. Every writer. Everywhere.
