You are wasting your time

You are wasting your time

Let me be direct with you. Why aren’t you writing? What excuses are you hiding behind? I’m sure you’ve read lots of blog posts about writer’s block and time management. I’ve written a few of them myself. But this isn’t one of those.

I’m going tell you something that you’ve got to understand right now if you really do want to write, publish something and make a difference in the world.

Because really putting it out there, actually completing and publishing something is what will transform you from a dreamer to a writer.

So, time for me to be direct with you my friend. Why aren’t you writing? What are you doing with your life right now that you’re using as an excuse not to write?  That is, why aren’t you putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and actually creating something? The act of being a writer is to write. So, why aren’t you writing?

Here’s the thing

You’re literally wasting your time. I bet you can come up with at least 10 excuses why you haven’t started writing that novel, that big business book, started on the blog you’ve been talking about forever but keep putting off till tomorrow.

I know all the reasons you invent for NOT having done those things. It’s a simple lie that you tell yourself every single day.

I’ll start writing tomorrow…when I have more time

What lies we tell ourselves! Here’s the truth and I’m going to be really direct with you. There’s no guarantee you’ll even be alive tomorrow. Your new life as a writer doesn’t start after you buy that shiny new Macbook Pro, or build a new Writer’s Studio out the back, or retire to the South of France to write The Great (Insert Your Country of Origin Here) novel.

Your time is running out of the celestial hourglass right now. Can you hear those grains of sand falling away? Here’s the thing. If you want to be a writer, pick up a pen right NOW and start that novel, that play, that business book, that children’s book. Act now and keep acting every single day that you have left. You’ve got to write like today is your last day on this glorious earth because one day, my friend, it really will be. You’re really running out of time.

If you want to be a writer, you’ve got to manage your time better.

If you’re still watching TV every night you’re a fool. If you waste your time scrolling through your Facebook updates on your phone you’re just as guilty. You’ve got to account for your time and what you’re doing with it each and every day. That’s because time wasted watching TV and news is time you can spend writing, creating a blog or maybe even creating a business.

You’ve got to act NOW. Your perfect life isn’t going to happen in 5 years time when you finish University or College and get the ‘dream job’, meet your perfect partner or build your perfect home. Unless you’re making changes in your life TODAY to reach your goals, you are never going to get there. If you want to write, publish and contribute to the world you have to start creating today with the knowledge that your time on Earth is limited.  If you don’t think about that one fact you may as well give up your crazy dream right now. Writers’ write. Everyday. Writers’ set goals and publish. Writers’ manage their time. How do you manage your time?

It’s not too late for you

So, What are you doing with your time? Everyday you have less time. It took me a long time to latch on to this simple reality. I’ve spent most of my life making stupid decisions, acting on impulse, wasting my time, putting off until tomorrow decisions and actions I should have made in the now. Putting off till tomorrow the dreams I had. Waiting for all the ducks to be in a row. I discovered in my 30’s that the ducks are never going to be in a row. You’ve got to create those ducks yourself, and line them up. You’ve got to make your own luck. This means just showing up and doing the work. Every, single day.

Time to create your reality

Time is fleeting and the universe is strange. I’m interested in quantum physics and one of the weirdest things to get your head around is something called the ‘observer effect‘. Google that if you like, but the basic idea is particles (the building blocks of atoms) literally don’t exist unless they are being observed. This is profound. Matter actually changes form depending on wether it’s being observed or not. This is fact, not theory.

What’s this mean to you? I think it means we really do create our own reality by will, by effort, by focused determination and by visualisation. If you want to be a writer, declare to the world you ARE a writer and write every single day.  BE a writer. Write with the goal of PUBLISHING what your write.

You create your reality every single day by every single decision that you make. Wether you choose to be a writer or sit on the couch and watch TV drinking beer is entirely your decision but if you want to make things happen in your life, you’ve got to put the work in. Every single day. Try turning the TV off. Stop wasting time on social media. Use your time to change your reality. You’ll be astounded by what you can accomplish.

So, how are you going to waste your time today? How are you going to use your precious time remaining to be amazing and become the writer that you can be? The choice has always been yours. Don’t make excuses.

Leave a comment or not. The choice is yours.
