Steve Martin famously said:
Writer’s Block is a fancy word invented by writers so they can drink more alcohol…
That may be, but when you just can’t get started turning to the bottle might seem a good idea. The good news is that writer’s block can easily be overcome. Read on to discover a quick hack for eliminating your writer’s block once and forever.
Overcoming Writer’s Block
Step 1: Don’t be Hard on Yourself
This is crucial. Stop being so hard on yourself. No-one needs to see your ideas, sketches and drafts. This one simple sentence will transform the way you think about Writer’s Block. Give yourself permission to write GARBAGE
Step 2 : Recognise What Writer’s Block IS
It’s called Writer’s Block for a simple reason. That’s because something is BLOCKING your creative flow. Giving yourself permission to write garbage will get rid of the blockage.
Step 3: Overcome Your Need for Perfection
This is the ONE thing that is guaranteed to cause Writer’s Block. Accept that you don’t have to be perfect. You just have to write. Think about what you want to write about, set a timer for 3 minutes, give yourself permission to write garbage and GO!
Step 4: Make a Deal with your Inner Critic
It’s your inner critic that drives your need for perfection. That’s a good thing, BUT don’t let your inner critic cripple you completely. Make a deal with your inner critic to criticize LATER, not while you’re trying to write. Then your creativity can be unblocked and flow.
That’s it! Give yourself permission to write garbage and return and repair AFTER you’ve written. That’s how you cure writer’s block. You can watch the entire video below.
