We’re all pretty dumb sometimes.
When we want to do something, it’s all a bit easy to rely on Doctor Google. Hell, I’ve learned NEVER to google anything when you’re sick. You’ll just end up with a self diagnosis of Ebola virus when all you’ve got is the man flu.
You know what I mean? It’s even worse when you start Googling about tech stuff. Overwhelm. Overload. Communication Breakdown.
Now, have you ever typed in – ‘how to publish an eBook’ into all the knowing Google Seer?
There is a lot of mystery around publishing an eBook. I’ve even ran a couple of surveys where, overwhelmingly, people say ‘It’s all too confusing’ and ‘too damn hard’. But more on that soon.
I’m a big believer in checklists and if you find a way of doing something regularly, a checklist is the easiest way to do it again and again.
I’ve helped a lot of happy writers become authors. And getting your first eBook published is a happy feeling. Not to mention your first sale. Cutting through the bull with a checklist is not hard.
Now, there’s a little bit more to it then that, but here’s what I find works well with my customers. Here’s my top 5 self-publishing checklist tips for new writers. Stay with me on this.
1: Get a great title
Now, this sounds a bit crazy. Starting an eBook project with the title? Believe me, it works. If you have a working title. It’s much easier to keep yourself focused.
2: Get a cover designed
Now this sounds even crazier, but if you have your title, and a great looking cover, well you’re on your way to motivation city. That’s because your ‘imaginary’ writing project has just become real. Writer’s Block be damned!
3: Pick a shipping date
You’ve got to ship! No matter what. Pick a date and stick to it.
4: Be a Pro
When the going get’s weird the weird turn pro. At some point you’re going to pivot from writer to indie publisher. Be a pro. Don’t do it all by yourself. Get help. There are plenty of hungry and highly skilled freelancers clamouring to help you on the interwebthing. Why, some of ’em are even known to do it for FIVE BUCKS!
5: Be a Smasher
I’m a big, big fan of Smashwords. And so should you be. Publish once and everywhere. Hell, the nice folks at Smashwords will even convert your book to ePub and Mobi for you. For FREE. What’s not to love.
So, when you get down to it and filter out the millions of pages on Dr Google about eBook publishing, you really can cut the bull and make it really simple with a simple checklist. Just don’t read about the Ebola symptoms.
