Another year passes, another Christmas lined up just around the corner. Have you spent another 12 months putting off that writing project? We all do, procrastinate, push back, wait for a better time.
As we look back on 2012 one thing is clear. There has never been a better time for writers to get out there, publish and find an audience. Whatever your style or ambition, writers no longer need to submit to publishers and wait the long, long wait for the cold and brief rejection slip.
The e-publishing revolution that began with the web and blogging has now upended the publishing business. Much like the record companies in the 1990’s who were caught unaware by the digital download music revolution, at first fighting the new distribution model, rather then embracing it.
It took the advent of iTunes to demonstrate people were willing to pay for electronic content for their iPods and mP3 players. Why am I rambling about music? Well, I’m a musician as well as a writer and it has always fascinated me as a model and precursor to what we are now seeing with the digital publishing revolution.
Content is king, but the revolution needed iPods and now iPads and e-readers like Kobo and Kindle to make the downloading of eBooks easy through services like Amazon, iTunes Bookstore and Lulu.
2012 showed that the e-book had arrived as a powerful force in publishing. In September 2012, Fifty Shades of Grey, outsold the entire Harry Potter series on the UK Amazon site. Smashing the download record of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by 2 to one.
Clearly, something is going on, Mr Jones. Writers are no longer at the mercy of publishers and benefit immensely from the financial rewards self publishing brings. An eBook published on Amazon leaves 70% of the retail price for the writer.
Quite a stark difference from the royaties paid by a publisher. The story is clear for writers. Find and nurture and develop your audience using social media, blogs and e-publishing and you can make an income from writing.
So what’s your story going to be in 2013? Have you made your writing plan yet? Finish that book, get out there and join the eBook revolution. Think 2012 was amazing? You aint seen nothing yet!
Wishing you all a Merry Xmas and a sensational 2013
