Ignore what your grandma told you. A badly designed cover can give your new eBook all the appeal of an ugly baby. After spending months or even years putting together your masterpiece, skimping on a professionally designed cover is false economy.
It is a crowded marketplace, and unless your title has phenomenal word of mouth to propel it, you still need to stand out on the digital eBookshelf. It is worthwhile engaging the services of a professional graphic designer.
You’d be surprised what you can get for less then $100. Of course you could do it yourself, but you’ll get more bang for your buck and better options to choose from by using a professional designer. I love your point and agree completely. The cover is important as it is the first thing you see and you decide whether it is for you or not based on that – even more so with digital stores.
